Why Wrong-Way Crashes Are So Dangerous in Massachusetts
Wrong-way crashes are among the most severe types of accidents on Massachusetts highways. Several factors combine to make these collisions especially deadly, including the forces involved, the severity of injuries sustained, the lack of reaction time, and the financial toll on victims. These crashes often have serious consequences for everyone involved.
When two vehicles travel toward each other at highway speed, the combined force of impact increases. A crash at 60 miles per hour between two vehicles effectively doubles the force compared to a single-vehicle collision. That energy transfers directly into the vehicles and their occupants, increasing the risk of injuries.
Injuries from wrong-way crashes are often among the most severe treated in emergency rooms. Head trauma, spinal injuries, internal bleeding, and multiple fractures are common. Many victims require surgery, intensive care, and long-term rehabilitation that may last months or even years.
Drivers encountering a wrong-way vehicle typically have almost no time to react. At combined speeds exceeding 120 miles per hour, the time between noticing danger and impact can be less than two seconds. This leaves little opportunity to avoid a collision.
The financial consequences of these crashes can be overwhelming. Ongoing medical bills can continue to build even after initial treatment ends. Victims may also face long-term rehabilitation and therapy expenses that add further strain.
Insurance claims in wrong-way crashes are often complex. Issues involving multiple drivers, policy limits, and underinsured motorist coverage can complicate the process. Insurers may also challenge injury claims or dispute certain costs, making recovery more difficult.
