Child Hurt, 11 Displaced After Two-Alarm Fire on Maple St in Roxbury, MA

July 5, 2026

Roxbury, MA (July 5, 2026) – A two-alarm fire broke out on Sunday morning, July 5, on Maple Street in Roxbury, displacing eleven residents, including eight children, and injuring one child.

The fire caused a partial structural collapse, preventing firefighters from accessing the interior of the building and requiring crews to work from the exterior. The injured child was taken to a local hospital for treatment. All residents were evacuated from the building.

The cause of the fire had not been confirmed at the time of this report.

We hope the injured child makes a full recovery and extend our sympathies to all eleven residents displaced by this devastating experience.

What Legal Options Do Fire Victims Have When a Building Collapses in Boston, MA?

When a residential fire results in a structural collapse and injuries to occupants, particularly children, those affected may have meaningful legal options under Massachusetts law depending on what investigators ultimately determine caused the fire and whether the building was properly maintained.

A partial roof collapse during a fire can indicate that the structure had pre-existing weaknesses or maintenance deficiencies that a landlord or property manager should have addressed, and if an investigation reveals such conditions, a negligence claim against the property owner may be available alongside any other applicable legal actions.

For families with children who were displaced or hurt in this type of incident, the financial consequences can be both immediate and lasting. Temporary housing costs, the loss of personal belongings, medical expenses for any injuries sustained, and the emotional impact of sudden displacement are among the burdens that can accumulate quickly in the days following a residential fire.

When a child is among those injured, parents may also need to consider the potential long-term effects of smoke inhalation or other injuries on their child's health and development, making consistent medical follow-up especially important in the weeks ahead.

In cases where the fire originated from a preventable cause or where the building's structural condition contributed to the collapse, identifying all potentially responsible parties is an important early step. These may include a landlord, a property management company, a contractor responsible for building maintenance, or a manufacturer of defective equipment.

A fire injury lawyer may be able to help displaced residents and injured families understand what legal options may be available once the investigation concludes, identify all potentially liable parties, and ensure that any compensation pursued reflects the full scope of their losses.
