Westwood, MA (September 22, 2026) – A student and a school bus driver were taken to the hospital after a single-vehicle crash on Downey Street in Westwood on Tuesday, September 22. The collision happened at about 3:45 p.m.
Westwood Public Schools said the bus was transporting students from Downey and Pine Hill Elementary Schools on its after-school route. One student was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the driver was also transported for medical care.
The driver’s condition was not immediately available. The district did not say how many students were on the bus at the time.
Authorities are investigating what caused the crash.
We hope the student and driver make full recoveries.
If your child was injured in a school bus crash in Westwood, you should have them examined by a doctor, contact the school for information about the collision, request the crash report, and keep copies of all medical records.
Depending on the circumstances, responsibility may involve the school district, a private bus company, another motorist, or another party connected to the collision. Determining who owned the bus, employed the driver, and controlled its operation can affect where a claim must be directed.
When a public school district may be legally responsible, Massachusetts law can require written notice of a claim within two years. This notice requirement is separate from filing a lawsuit, so waiting for your child’s medical treatment to end could create problems if the deadline passes.
Although Massachusetts generally allows three years to bring a personal injury lawsuit, special rules can pause that deadline while an injured person is a minor. However, those rules do not necessarily extend the separate notice period that applies to claims against a public entity.
If a government-related deadline applies, a bus accident lawyer can identify the proper public body and make sure the required notice is sent on time. An attorney can also obtain records that may clarify who was responsible for transporting your child.
