Marlborough, MA (September 25, 2026) – A 42-year-old woman was seriously hurt early Friday, September 25, in a wreck that involved an electric bike on Hosmer Street. The wreck happened around 5 a.m., according to Marlborough police.
The woman was riding as a passenger on the back of the e-bike, which was being driven by a 42-year-old man.
Police said the driver hit a bump and lost control, causing the e-bike to go down. The woman was thrown from the bike and struck the roadway face-first, with the e-bike landing on top of her.
She was flown to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester due to the seriousness of her injuries. Her condition has not been made public.
The driver was also thrown from the e-bike but was only slightly hurt. He was treated at the scene and declined to go to the hospital.
The investigation into the collision was continuing as of Friday morning.
We are thinking of the woman as she recovers from her injuries.
Massachusetts generally does not classify e-bikes the same way it classifies motor vehicles, which can create real complications for anyone hurt while riding one. E-bikes typically fall outside the state's mandatory auto insurance requirements, so the standard no-fault personal injury protection (PIP) benefits that apply to car crashes usually do not extend to e-bike riders in the same way.
This gap can leave injured riders relying on their own health insurance, a driver's liability coverage if a motor vehicle was involved, or homeowner's or renter's insurance in some cases. Without PIP-style coverage automatically applying, proving fault and identifying which policy should pay can take longer and involve more back-and-forth with insurers.
In these cases, a personal injury lawyer can help sort through which insurance policies might apply and can push back if an insurer tries to deny a claim based on the vehicle's classification.
