Springfield, MA (September 16, 2026) – A firefighter was hurt Tuesday evening, September 15, while crews battled a house fire on Hebron Street in Springfield.
The Springfield Fire Department crews arrived at the multi-story residential building to find heavy smoke and flames breaking through the roof. Ladder trucks were positioned to fight the fire near the top of the structure while ground crews set up hoses along the street. All active fire companies were on hand to help bring the fire under control.
The fire was extinguished by approximately 9:30 p.m. One firefighter was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover fully.
The cause of the fire remains under review.
We're glad to hear the firefighter is expected to make a full recovery.
In Massachusetts, firefighters hurt while performing job duties are generally entitled to workers' compensation benefits covering medical treatment and a portion of lost wages, regardless of fault.
These benefits are separate from any personal injury claim and apply whenever an injury arises out of and in the course of employment, including injuries from smoke exposure, falls, or physical strain during a fire.
How much a firefighter can receive typically depends on the average weekly wage before the injury and the type of disability involved. Massachusetts recognizes several categories, including temporary total disability, temporary partial disability, and permanent disability, each calculated differently under state law.
Medical benefits typically cover reasonable and necessary treatment connected to the job-related injury, though disputes can arise over whether a particular treatment qualifies.
Firefighters and other first responders in Springfield sometimes face added complexity when an injury develops or worsens over time. Different from a sudden injury, it can be harder to prove a clear connection to a specific incident.
Workers' compensation claims can be denied or underpaid, especially when an insurer disputes the extent of an injury or its connection to the job; many firefighters find it helpful to have documentation reviewed early by a personal injury lawyer.
