Our thoughts are with anyone affected as more details become available.
Determining fault becomes far more complicated when more than two vehicles are involved in a crash. Massachusetts follows a modified comparative negligence rule, which means each driver's share of responsibility is calculated individually, and a person can recover damages only if they are found 50% or less at fault.
In a chain-reaction crash, more than one driver may share responsibility, and insurance companies representing different vehicles often dispute how fault should be divided. Police reports, witness statements, and vehicle damage patterns all become critical pieces of evidence, since they can show which impact happened first and how the collision unfolded.
A car accident lawyer can help sort through conflicting accounts and can work to make sure fault isn't unfairly assigned to a client based on incomplete information.
