Why Rollover Crashes Are So Dangerous in Massachusetts
Rollover crashes are among the most dangerous types of accidents because they combine several risk factors at once. These incidents often involve unstable vehicle movement, repeated impacts, roof damage, and a higher chance of ejection. Each of these elements increases the likelihood of serious harm.
The flipping motion during a rollover throws occupants in directions the body is not built to handle. Seatbelts help, but the forces involved can still twist torsos, strain necks, and jolt spines. Unrestrained passengers may strike windows, doors, or the roof during the event.
Unlike a typical collision, a rollover can involve several impacts within seconds of the initial loss of control. A vehicle may hit the ground, a barrier, or another object as it rotates. Each point of contact sends force through the cabin.
Roof crush occurs when the weight of the vehicle lands on its upper frame during a flip. If the roof collapses inward, the space inside the cabin shrinks quickly. Passengers can become trapped, compressed, or exposed to debris.
Occupants who are not secured may be thrown from the vehicle during a rollover event. Ejection often leads to catastrophic outcomes because the body lands on pavement, objects, or nearby traffic. Even partial ejection through a window can cause severe crushing injuries.
Rollovers produce some of the most serious injuries seen in crashes across the state. Spinal trauma, traumatic brain injuries, fractures, and internal bleeding are common outcomes. Recovery may require extended hospital care, surgery, and rehabilitation.
