Home Fire Displaces Families and Injures Firefighters on Bowditch St in Braintree, MA

July 5, 2026

Braintree, MA (July 5, 2026) – Several firefighters were treated for injuries while battling a three-alarm fire that destroyed a home and displaced multiple families in Braintree overnight. The fire broke out just after 10 p.m. on Sunday, July 5.

Firefighters encountered heavy fire upon arrival and were forced to evacuate due to the heat and volume of flames. Two firefighters were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and one was treated at the scene. A dog trapped inside was successfully rescued, while the home's residents had already safely evacuated with another pet.

The fire spread to a van parked in the driveway and caused significant heat damage to an adjacent home, which has been deemed uninhabitable. The home where the fire originated is considered a total loss.

The Red Cross was called in to assist displaced residents from both homes.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Braintree Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal's Office.

We hope the injured firefighters make full recoveries and extend our sympathies to all those displaced.

What Legal Options Do Displaced Fire Victims Have in Braintree, MA?

When a residential fire destroys one home and renders a neighboring property uninhabitable, the families displaced from both buildings may have legal options worth exploring once investigators determine what caused the fire.

In Massachusetts, a property owner whose fire spreads to a neighboring structure may bear legal responsibility for the resulting harm depending on the specific circumstances and what the investigation reveals about the fire's origin. If the fire resulted from a neglected hazard, faulty wiring, a defective appliance, or another preventable condition, a negligence or product liability claim may be available to those affected by the spread of the fire.

For the family whose home was destroyed, the financial consequences extend well beyond temporary displacement. The total loss of a residence means not only the cost of alternative housing but also the loss of personal belongings, furniture, and other property accumulated over time.

For the neighboring family deemed unable to return to their home, the uncertainty of not knowing when or whether the structure can be repaired adds further financial and emotional burden. Both families may also need to account for increased living costs, insurance deductibles, and gaps between what insurance covers and their actual losses.

When the cause of the fire is discovered, a burn injury lawyer who is familiar with Massachusetts law can help displaced families understand what legal options might be available. This includes investigating the results of the State Fire Marshal’s investigation; ascertaining if there is any party, including a property owner, contractor, or product manufacturer, that may be responsible for the origin and spread of the fire, and what kind of compensation might be available beyond what a typical homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy provides.
