Vineyard Haven, MA (September 17, 2026) – Two drivers were taken to the hospital after a collision on State Road near Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road in Vineyard Haven on Thursday, September 17.
Tisbury Police reported that a gray sedan was stopped at the bottom of Edgartown Road before making a left turn onto State Road. The sedan entered the roadway too soon and struck the rear passenger side of a black Mercedes traveling toward downtown Vineyard Haven.
The Mercedes then left the roadway and hit a utility pole. Tisbury Fire, Police, and EMS assisted both drivers, who were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The crash damaged the utility pole and caused power outages for several homes and businesses. Part of State Road was closed while crews worked and traffic was diverted in both directions. Tisbury Police cited the sedan driver for failing to yield.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Our thoughts are with both drivers, and we wish them a smooth and full recovery.
After a car crash in Vineyard Haven, your Personal Injury Protection coverage, or PIP, generally pays qualifying medical bills first regardless of who caused the collision. Massachusetts drivers typically have up to $8,000 in PIP benefits.
To document what happened, save photographs, video footage, the police report, repair records, and contact information for people who saw the crash. These records can help establish how the collision occurred and support an insurance claim.
Depending on your losses, you may also have a claim against a driver who caused the crash. Compensation may include lost income, pain and suffering, and other expenses that are not fully covered by PIP or health insurance.
Because Massachusetts uses modified comparative negligence, your share of fault can affect how much you recover. You may generally recover damages if your responsibility is not greater than the combined responsibility of the parties you are seeking damages from.
You also have a limited amount of time to file a personal injury case. In Massachusetts, the general filing deadline is three years, although a different deadline may apply in some circumstances.
It may not always be clear which insurance policy should cover your medical bills after a crash. A car accident lawyer can review the available coverage, communicate with the insurers, and explain your legal options.
