Marlborough, MA (May 19, 2026) – Two motorcyclists suffered serious injuries after a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 495 in Marlborough on Sunday afternoon, May 17. The collision happened shortly before 4 p.m. on the southbound side of the highway near mile marker 62.

According to the Massachusetts State Police, one motorcycle collided with a passenger vehicle, while the second motorcycle left the roadway and crashed into a wooded area. Authorities said one of the motorcycles caught fire following the collision.

Emergency crews responded to the scene and requested a medical rescue helicopter to assist one of the injured riders. The helicopter landed on Interstate 495, leading officials to temporarily shut down the southbound lanes for approximately 20 minutes.

Both motorcyclists were transported to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester with serious injuries. Police said both riders are expected to survive.

Officials did not report injuries to anyone else involved in the crash. No charges or citations have been issued at this time.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the collision.

We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.

What Causes Multi-Vehicle Motorcycle Crashes on Massachusetts Highways

Motorcycle crashes involving multiple vehicles on highways like Interstate 495 are often complex incidents that can happen in a matter of seconds. When several vehicles are traveling at high speeds, even a minor error in judgment can quickly escalate into a serious collision involving multiple impacts.

One common factor in these crashes is sudden traffic slowdowns. Motorcycles are more vulnerable to abrupt braking situations, especially when following vehicles too closely or when visibility is limited by larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks. Chain-reaction collisions can occur when a driver suddenly stops, and others are unable to react in time.

Lane changes and merging traffic also play a major role in multi-vehicle motorcycle crashes. Drivers who fail to check blind spots or misjudge a motorcycle’s speed may unintentionally cut off riders, forcing them into evasive maneuvers that can lead to loss of control or secondary impacts.

Roadway conditions can further increase risk. Potholes, uneven pavement, debris, or shifting traffic patterns in construction zones may be especially hazardous for motorcycles, which are more sensitive to surface changes than larger vehicles.

After a serious crash, investigators often reconstruct the sequence of events using physical evidence, vehicle positions, and roadway markings. This helps determine how the collision started and whether any driver actions contributed to the crash.

Additionally, riders injured in highway crashes may face long recovery periods, including surgery, rehabilitation, and ongoing medical care. Even when riders are expected to survive, injuries can still have lasting physical and financial effects that require continued treatment and support.

Motorcycle accident victims in Marlborough may face medical expenses, lost wages, and a long recovery process after a serious crash. Understanding your legal rights early on can make it easier to protect important evidence and deal with insurance companies during the claims process.
