Medford, MA – One Hospitalized Following House Fire on Central Ave

March 19, 2026
Medford, MA (March 19, 2026) – Early Wednesday morning, March 18, emergency crews responded to a house fire on Central Avenue, which left one injured. The blaze produced smoke visible for miles, prompting multiple calls to the fire department around 6:15 a.m.

Firefighters from the Medford Fire Department, assisted by units from four neighboring towns, including Malden, arrived on the scene to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of the two-family home. One person was transported to a local hospital for smoke inhalation. No firefighters were reported injured. Four residents were displaced due to the damage, and officials are currently assessing the full extent of the property impact.

The back of the building sustained significant fire damage, and crews worked to manage water supply issues while controlling the blaze. Authorities worked to secure the scene while ensuring the safety of neighbors and emergency personnel.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, though investigators believe it started on the first floor at the back of the home.

We hope the injured victim makes a full recovery and hope for the well-being of all those involved.

What Are the Long-Term Effects of Burn Injuries in Massachusetts?

Burn injuries, even when treated promptly, can have lasting effects on a person’s physical and emotional health. Scarring and changes in skin texture or pigmentation can persist long after the initial injury. Severe burns may require reconstructive surgery or ongoing dermatological care to manage these changes. Physical limitations can also develop if muscles, joints, or tendons are affected, and patients often require physical therapy to restore mobility and prevent contractures.

Pain and sensitivity in affected areas are common, and nerve damage can lead to chronic discomfort that may need long-term management. Smoke inhalation from a fire can cause respiratory complications, including irritation of the lungs, chronic cough, or reduced lung function, sometimes requiring ongoing pulmonary care. Beyond the physical effects, survivors may experience emotional challenges such as anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, or depression. Counseling, support networks, and mental health care are important components of recovery.

Prompt medical attention and adherence to prescribed therapies can improve outcomes and reduce the risk of long-term complications. Keeping thorough records of medical visits, treatments, and progress can support both physical and emotional recovery and may also be important in addressing any insurance or legal matters related to the incident.
