Methuen, MA — Six Displaced After Home Fire at Barker St

May 11, 2026

Methuen, MA (May 11, 2026) — On Sunday morning, a fast-moving structure fire left a local residence damaged and a family of six in search of temporary housing. The Methuen Fire Department received the initial report of a fire at 20 Barker Street at approximately 10:06 a.m.

Fire crews arrived on the scene to find smoke showing from the building. Firefighters executed an aggressive interior attack, successfully knocking down the main body of the fire by 10:18 a.m.

While the fire was contained relatively quickly, the damage to the home was significant enough to render it uninhabitable. Command officially requested the American Red Cross to assist the six residents displaced by the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

We extend our thoughts to everyone affected by this accident.

Legal Protections and Insurance Rights Following a Residential Structure Fire

In Massachusetts, residents displaced by a structure fire are protected by specific insurance statutes and tenant rights designed to assist with relocation and the recovery of property. To protect your interests, you must secure a copy of the official fire department incident report, document all damaged personal property with photographs once the scene is cleared, and consult a professional to ensure that your Additional Living Expenses (ALE) coverage is properly activated to cover temporary housing costs.

Activating Additional Living Expenses (ALE) Coverage

If you are displaced from your house, your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy typically includes Additional Living Expenses (ALE) coverage. This is a mechanical necessity for covering the cost of hotel stays, restaurant meals, and other increased expenses incurred because you cannot live in your home.

Navigating Landlord-Tenant Obligations After a Fire

For those who rent their homes, Massachusetts law dictates specific responsibilities for landlords following a fire. You have the right to be released from your lease or to have your rent prorated if the unit is uninhabitable. However, you must be careful not to waive your rights to your security deposit or personal property claims.

Recovering Compensation for Personal Property and Structural Loss

Fire damage often involves a combination of direct flame damage, smoke contamination, and water damage from firefighting efforts. You have the right to a replacement cost or actual cash value settlement for your lost belongings.

Determining Liability for Origin and Cause of the Blaze

The determination of the fire's origin can have significant legal implications. If the fire was caused by a faulty appliance, a defective electrical system, or a negligent repair performed by a contractor, you may have the right to pursue a subrogation claim or a third-party lawsuit.

A lawyer works with private fire investigators to review the Fire Department’s findings, identifying any third parties who may be legally responsible for the loss and pursuing additional compensation beyond what insurance provides.

A consultation with a personal injury attorney after a residential fire can be helpful, as they can clarify available options and explain how Massachusetts law may apply. Legal guidance can assist with reviewing policy terms, organizing records, and handling insurer communication.
