Motorcyclist Extricated After Crash With Box Truck on I-495 in Haverhill, MA

September 9, 2026

Haverhill, MA (September 9, 2026) – A motorcyclist was extricated and airlifted to a Boston hospital on Tuesday morning, September 8, after a crash that involved a box truck on I-495 South near the River Street on-ramp.

The motorcycle operator was initially trapped beneath the truck and reported unconscious but breathing when emergency units arrived. Haverhill firefighters worked to free him from beneath the vehicle.

He was first taken by ambulance to Merrimack Valley Health in Lawrence. Boston MedFlight later transported him to Boston Medical Center for further treatment.

Massachusetts State Police remained on scene to document and investigate the crash. They continue to work to determine how the accident occurred.

Our thoughts are with him and his family as he receives treatment.

Commercial Trucks and Motorcycle Safety on Massachusetts Highways

Highway crashes between motorcycles and commercial trucks tend to raise more complicated liability questions than typical passenger-vehicle collisions. This is principally because trucking companies operate under a separate layer of state and federal regulation.

Massachusetts requires commercial drivers to hold a valid CDL and follow Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration rules, which cover hours of service, vehicle maintenance, and load securement, and a violation of any of these standards can become central to establishing fault after a crash.

Motorcyclists face a heightened risk in these collisions simply due to the size and weight disparity between a bike and a box truck. Injuries in these crashes tend to be severe: traumatic brain injuries, spinal damage, and crush injuries are common even when a rider is wearing proper safety gear.

Massachusetts does not require motorcyclists to carry a specific type of coverage beyond the state's standard auto insurance minimums. However, riders are strongly encouraged to carry underinsured motorist coverage, since commercial trucking policies can still be contested or delayed by the carrier's insurer.

Investigating a truck-involved crash typically requires more than a standard police report. Trucking companies are required to maintain electronic logging device data, maintenance records, and driver qualification files, and this information can be critical to determining whether fatigue, mechanical failure, or a regulatory violation played a role.

Trucking companies and their insurers often move quickly to secure their own version of events, which is why the early involvement of a motorcycle accident lawyer in Massachusetts can be so important. A lawyer can legally request the preservation of this data before it's routinely deleted or overwritten under a carrier's standard record-retention policy.

At Fiorentino Legal, P.C., we have worked through these layered liability questions before and understand how commercial insurance policies can complicate a claim.
