Three Injured in Crash on Merrimac St in Newburyport, MA
Newburyport, MA (June 26, 2026) – Three patrons were hurt Thursday evening, June 25, after an SUV crashed through the front windows of a restaurant on Merrimac Street.
The vehicle, a BMW SUV, struck the building shortly after entering through the front windows. A 67-year-old Groveland woman was behind the wheel and was not wounded in the crash.
The driver remained on the scene following the crash. Newburyport Police say alcohol is not believed to have played a role.
The investigation into how the SUV struck the building is ongoing.
We hope all three patrons recover quickly from their injuries.
What Should Drivers Know About Liability After a Vehicle Crashes Into a Building in Newburyport, MA?
When a vehicle crashes into a building, liability typically falls on the driver if their actions, such as pedal error or loss of control, caused the crash, though store or property owners can sometimes share responsibility if a known hazard like a missing bollard contributed.
Newburyport's downtown area sees steady foot and vehicle traffic, and storefront crashes can put pedestrians and patrons at risk in commercial corridors like Merrimac Street.
Patrons injured when a vehicle enters a building can suffer broken bones, lacerations from glass and debris, and head injuries depending on where they were seated or standing at the time. Recovery from these types of injuries can take weeks or months, and some patrons may need ongoing medical care.
A car accident lawyer can help injured patrons understand who may be responsible for their injuries, whether that is the driver, the property owner, or another party. An attorney can also help clarify what types of compensation may be available for medical bills and other losses tied to the crash.
