Officer Hurt After Vehicle Strike on W Main St in Barnstable, MA

September 14, 2026

Barnstable, MA (September 14, 2026) – A Barnstable police officer was injured after being struck by a vehicle while assisting with pedestrian traffic on West Main Street near the Cape Cod Melody Tent in Hyannis late Sunday night, September 13.

The officer was standing in a marked crosswalk shortly after 10 p.m. as a ZZ Top concert was ending. Police said the officer was wearing a bright reflective jacket and holding a flashlight while positioned in an illuminated crosswalk with flashing lights.

A vehicle traveling eastbound on West Main Street entered the crosswalk and struck the officer. He received aid at the location before being taken to Cape Cod Hospital for treatment.

Police developed probable cause to believe the 43-year-old driver from Osterville was operating under the influence of alcohol. The driver was charged with operating under the influence of liquor, operating under the influence with serious injury and negligence, and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

The investigation remains ongoing.

We hope the injured officer receives the medical treatment needed and makes a full recovery.

What Compensation May Be Available After a Pedestrian Crash in Barnstable, MA?

An injured pedestrian may be able to seek compensation for medical expenses, lost income, and other losses when another party may be legally responsible. The potential compensation can depend on the circumstances of the crash, the severity of the injuries, and available insurance coverage.

Medical treatment should be documented from the initial hospital visit through follow-up care. Hospital bills, diagnostic testing, medications, physical therapy, and other treatment records may help establish both the injuries and related expenses.

Lost income can also become part of the financial losses following an injury. Pay stubs, employer statements, missed work records, and documentation of reduced hours may help show how the injury affected someone's ability to earn income.

Other costs may arise during recovery. Transportation expenses, out-of-pocket medical costs, and other accident-related expenses should be tracked and supported with receipts or other available documentation.

Evidence from the crash may also be useful when evaluating a potential claim. Photographs, witness information, surveillance footage, medical records, and official crash documentation could help establish what happened and connect the resulting losses to the crash.

Insurance coverage is another consideration. A personal injury attorney can review applicable policies, communications with insurers, medical records, and financial documentation to help explain what compensation may be available.
