Can Vehicle Data Help Prove What Happened in a Quincy, MA Crash?

Yes, many modern vehicles store crash data that can help establish how a collision unfolded. For example, when airbags deploy, a vehicle's event data recorder (sometimes called a "black box") usually captures details like speed, braking, and steering input in the seconds before impact. This data can become important evidence, particularly when the full sequence of events is not yet clear from witness accounts alone.

Event data recorders are common in vehicles manufactured in recent years, and Massachusetts law generally treats this data as belonging to the vehicle's owner, meaning access typically requires consent or a formal request.

After a crash, vehicles tend to be repaired, sold, or scrapped relatively quickly after a crash. Consequently, there can be a limited window to request and preserve this information before it becomes unavailable.

Vehicle data can be overwritten or lost if not requested promptly, so timing matters when pursuing a claim. A car accident lawyer in Massachusetts can help send preservation requests to insurers or vehicle owners, arrange for data extraction, and evaluate what the information shows about how the crash occurred.
