One Hurt, Five Units Displaced in Somerville, MA Apartment Fire

September 9, 2026

Somerville, MA (September 9, 2026) – One person was injured early Tuesday morning, September 8, after a fire broke out at a Somerville apartment building, displacing all five units inside.

The Somerville Fire Department crews responded to 37 Dartmouth Street at approximately 2:57 a.m. and found heavy fire conditions inside a first-floor apartment. Flames extended out a window and spread up the building's exterior toward the second floor, according to officials.

A first-floor resident jumped from a window before crews arrived and was taken to a hospital with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening. Firefighters also heard calls for help and guided a second-floor resident out through heavy smoke.

All occupants of the three-story, five-unit building have been displaced. The Red Cross and Somerville city services are assisting those affected.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

We hope for a full and quick recovery for the injured resident.

What Legal Rights Do Tenants Have After a Somerville Apartment Fire?

Tenants displaced or hurt in an apartment fire in Massachusetts may have legal options against a landlord or property manager if the fire resulted from a maintenance failure, a code violation, or a hazard the property owner knew about and failed to fix.

Injuries from an apartment fire can range from burns and smoke inhalation to injuries sustained while escaping from it. Additionally, displacement adds another layer of harm beyond physical injury, since residents can face sudden costs for temporary housing, lost personal belongings, and time away from work while sorting out where to live next.

Under Massachusetts premises liability law, a landlord has a duty to maintain rental property in a reasonably safe condition, including functioning smoke detectors, adequate electrical systems, and compliance with state building and fire codes.

If a fire is determined to trace back to a landlord's failure to meet these obligations, such as ignoring a known electrical issue or failing a required inspection, tenants may be able to pursue compensation for medical costs, property loss, and temporary living expenses.

Determining this commonly requires access to inspection records and fire investigation findings, and a personal injury attorney in Massachusetts can help request and review that documentation before it becomes difficult to obtain.
