Somerville, MA (September 4, 2026) – One person was hurt on Thursday morning, September 3, after a fire broke out at a restaurant on Highland Avenue.
The Somerville Fire Department and emergency units were called to Highland Cuisine at 2 Highland Avenue at approximately 8:05 a.m. The fire started in the kitchen before spreading above the ceiling, and crews were able to reach and put out the flames quickly.
The restaurant suffered fire, water, and smoke damage as a result. One employee was treated on-site for an injury before being taken to a local hospital by ambulance.
The cause of the fire had not yet been determined at the time.
We hope the injured employee has a smooth recovery.
An employee hurt in a workplace fire in Massachusetts generally has coverage through workers' compensation regardless of fault, though a separate claim against a third party may also be possible if their negligence contributed to the fire.
Workplace fires can cause burns, smoke inhalation, and respiratory injuries, some of which may not be fully apparent until hours or days later. Employees may also face lost wages while recovering, in addition to any ongoing medical treatment.
In these cases, a personal injury attorney can help an injured employee understand whether their situation is limited to a workers' compensation claim or whether a separate personal injury claim against another party is available.
This distinction typically depends on the fire's cause, which may involve faulty equipment, an electrical issue, or a landlord's failure to maintain the building properly. Investigating the cause carefully can make a real difference in what options exist.
