What Kinds of Injuries Are Common After an Apartment Fire in Hyannis, MA?
Smoke inhalation tends to be the most immediate concern in a residential fire, since breathing in heated air and toxic gases can damage the lungs and airway even without direct contact with flames.
Burns are another common injury, which can range from minor surface burns to more severe cases requiring skin grafts or extended hospital stays. Even brief contact with hot surfaces, doorknobs, or falling debris during an escape can cause significant harm, and burn injuries usually need specialized treatment well beyond the initial emergency visit.
People fleeing a fire, especially from a second floor, can also suffer injuries unrelated to the flames themselves, including sprains, fractures, or head injuries from falls, jumps, or collisions in the dark and smoke-filled space. Respiratory issues from smoke exposure can also persist for weeks, with some people developing chronic coughing or breathing difficulty long after the fire is out.
Because these injuries can compound one another and some effects take time to fully appear, a Massachusetts personal injury lawyer can help make sure medical documentation captures the full scope of what someone experienced, not just the injuries treated immediately at the hospital.
At Fiorentino Legal, P.C., we can help residential fire victims understand what to document and how that documentation might support a claim later on.
