Reading, MA – Two Injured in Serious House Fire on James Rd

March 18, 2026
Reading, MA (March 18, 2026) – On Wednesday evening, March 18, emergency crews responded to a large house fire on James Road in Reading that left two individuals injured, including a firefighter.

According to Reading fire officials, crews arrived at the scene shortly before 6 p.m. and found the homeowner on the first floor suffering from multiple burns. The individual was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Firefighters reported that challenging conditions inside the home significantly complicated their response efforts. In addition to cold and snowy weather, a large accumulation of personal belongings, consistent with a hoarding situation, blocked hallways and rooms, making it difficult and dangerous for crews to move through the structure and advance hose lines.

Officials also noted that firefighters faced intense heat, heavy smoke, and very low visibility while working to contain the blaze. During the response, a firefighter from an assisting department was also injured and transported to the hospital.

Fire crews are expected to remain on scene into the early morning hours to ensure the fire is fully extinguished and to prevent any potential flare-ups. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Our thoughts are with those injured in this incident, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery.

How Can a Fire Investigation Report Help My Claim in Massachusetts?

After a residential fire, a fire investigation report can play a critical role in supporting an insurance claim or legal case. This report provides an official and detailed account of how the fire started, how it spread, and the conditions observed at the scene.

Fire investigation reports are typically prepared by fire departments or specialized investigators. They may include information about the origin and cause of the fire, contributing factors such as electrical issues or hazardous conditions, and observations about the structure and any damage. In some cases, the report may also identify whether negligence or code violations played a role.

Insurance companies often rely on these reports when evaluating property damage claims. A clear and well-documented report can help establish the cause of the fire and confirm the extent of the damage, which may reduce disputes during the claims process.

Additionally, a fire investigation report can be valuable if you pursue legal action. It can serve as key evidence in cases involving landlord liability, faulty products, or unsafe living conditions. Attorneys often use these findings alongside repair estimates, photographs, and witness statements to build a strong case.

It is important to request a copy of the fire investigation report once it becomes available and review it carefully. Ensuring that the information is accurate can help protect your rights and strengthen your claim as you move forward. Speaking with a personal injury accident lawyer can be helpful as they can explain your rights and available options.
