Serious injuries can bring medical bills that far exceed the coverage many drivers carry. Massachusetts requires a minimum of $20,000 in bodily injury liability coverage per person and $40,000 for everyone hurt in the same wreck.
The coverage also requires $8,000 in personal injury protection, or PIP, which generally pays reasonable medical costs and part of lost wages regardless of fault.
When several people are injured, their claims can compete for one shared limit, and the at-fault driver's policy may run out before every bill is paid. To fill part of the gap, many people turn to their underinsured motorist coverage, if it is part of their policy. Umbrella policies and an employer's commercial coverage may add further layers, depending on who was driving and why.
Coverage details are spread across several policies, so the paperwork matters. Declarations pages, PIP payment records, medical bills, and any notices of denial can show what is available and what has already been paid. To navigate this process, the guidance of a car accident lawyer in Massachusetts can be valuable. Legal guidance can help identify every policy that may apply, request coverage information from insurers, and review whether the limits leave a gap that other sources may help fill.
