What Information Should I Exchange After a Crash in Massachusetts?

After a crash in Massachusetts, you should exchange key information with the other driver as soon as it is safe to do so. This includes full names, contact details, driver's license numbers, license plate numbers, vehicle information, and insurance policy details.

Collecting this information at the scene protects you during the claims process. Massachusetts law requires drivers involved in a crash that results in injury or significant property damage to report the accident to the Registry of Motor Vehicles within five days. Having accurate information from all parties makes this process smoother and helps avoid disputes later. If witnesses are present, collecting their names and contact details can also prove valuable.

Beyond exchanging information, documenting the scene strengthens any future claim. Use your phone to photograph vehicle damage, the position of the vehicles, road conditions, traffic signs, and any visible injuries. These images can help establish what happened and where each vehicle was at the time of the collision. Avoid discussing fault at the scene, and do not provide recorded statements to insurance adjusters before speaking with an attorney.

A personal injury attorney can help you understand what information is most relevant to your case and how to use it effectively. Legal guidance can also help clarify how Massachusetts insurance rules apply to moped and motorcycle riders specifically, as coverage questions in these cases can differ from standard car accidents.
