Workers’ Compensation in Massachusetts: What Should You Know After a Workplace Injury?

If you’re injured on the job in Massachusetts, workers’ compensation is typically the primary system that provides coverage for medical care and certain lost wages. The most important step is to report the injury as soon as possible and seek appropriate medical treatment.

Workers’ compensation generally covers necessary medical expenses related to the injury, including hospital visits, treatment, and rehabilitation. If the injury prevents you from working, you may also be eligible for partial wage replacement while you recover.

In situations like a training accident or fall, the focus is usually on whether the injury occurred in the course of employment. Even if the incident is still under investigation, you can often begin the process of receiving benefits while details are being reviewed.

Employers and their insurance carriers may require documentation, including medical records and incident reports. Keeping copies of everything, such as treatment plans, work restrictions, and communication, can help ensure the process goes more smoothly.

You may also be asked to attend follow-up evaluations or independent medical exams. Attending all appointments and following medical guidance is important not only for recovery but also for maintaining eligibility for benefits.

Because workplace injuries can affect both your health and your ability to work, understanding how the system applies to your situation can make a difference as you move forward.

If you’ve been injured at work, having guidance can help you better understand your options and stay on track. Speaking with a professional can help you navigate the process, keep your documentation organized, and focus on your recovery.
