Westwood, MA (September 16, 2026) – A state trooper was hurt Wednesday morning, September 16, after a cruiser was struck in a chain-reaction collision on Interstate 95 northbound near University Avenue. The trooper was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
Massachusetts State police said two vehicles were involved in an initial wreck around 8:35 a.m. The trooper's cruiser was then struck as a result, and at least one person from the crashing vehicles also had minor injuries.
All northbound lanes reopened by about 9:40 a.m. The cause of the wreck remains under review.
We're glad to hear everyone involved is expected to recover.
When one highway incident sets off a second collision moments later, Massachusetts law generally treats each driver's conduct separately when assigning fault.
The state follows a modified comparative negligence rule, which means a driver found 51 percent or more responsible for causing harm cannot recover damages. If a driver is found partially at fault, they can still recover a reduced amount. In a sequence that involves multiple vehicles, insurance carriers usually dispute exactly how much of the resulting harm each driver caused.
Timing and positioning become especially important in these cases. A driver who stops or slows for an earlier incident and is then struck by a following vehicle may have a stronger claim if the following driver failed to maintain a safe distance or adjust for road conditions.
For these cases, evidence such as dashcam footage, 911 call records, and witness statements can all help establish how much time passed between the first and second collisions. All this documentation can heavily determine how fault gets divided.
To collect this evidence, many people turn to a car accident lawyer in Massachusetts for assistance. A lawyer can request traffic camera footage, dispatch records, and insurance statements before that information becomes harder to obtain, then use it to reconstruct how the two collisions unfolded.
