Brewster, MA (September 18, 2026) – A 24-year-old Brewster woman and a 38-year-old Truro man are dead after their vehicles struck each other head-on on Route 6A in Brewster. It happened just after 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 17.
Firefighters from Orleans, Harwich, and Eastham responded to assist Brewster crews at the scene. Officials said each person was alone in their car.
Both people became trapped inside their vehicles, and both cars had extensive front-end damage. Emergency units struggled to reach them at first because of how badly the vehicles were crushed.
The woman lost her life at the roadside. The man was taken to Cape Cod Hospital, where he later died.
Investigators are still working to determine what led to the wreck.
Our condolences go out to the loved ones of both.
When a Massachusetts family loses someone because of another party's negligence, the wrongful death statute sets out who can bring a claim and how. The claim is generally filed by the personal representative of the estate, who acts for the surviving family members entitled to recover. Those beneficiaries usually include a spouse, children, or other next of kin, depending on the family.
Damages under the statute can include reasonable funeral and burial expenses and the fair monetary value of the person's lost income, services, guidance, and companionship. Punitive damages may also apply when the death was caused by malicious, willful, wanton, or reckless conduct, or by gross negligence.
A related claim for any conscious pain and suffering before death may be available as well. Which of these apply depends on the facts and the evidence, so no two claims look exactly alike.
Deadlines and documentation shape how a claim moves forward. Massachusetts generally allows three years from the date of death to file a wrongful death action. Vehicle data, maintenance records, and witness statements can change or disappear with time.
A wrongful death lawyer can help a personal representative identify every potentially responsible party and insurance policy, gather records, and keep the filing deadline in view.
