Two Killed After Crash Shuts Down I-290 in Marlborough, MA

August 11, 2026

Marlborough, MA (August 11, 2026) – Two people died on Monday afternoon, August 10, after a crash closed part of Interstate 290 eastbound. Both were ejected from a white SUV involved in the wreck, according to the Marlborough Fire.

A person riding in a second vehicle, a black SUV, was taken to the hospital with injuries. One of two dogs in the white SUV was also hurt and taken to an animal hospital, while the second dog was uninjured.

One lane on the opposite side of the highway was closed to allow emergency units to respond. Traffic was affected for hours before the roadway reopened just after 7 p.m.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

We extend our deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.

How Long Do Families Have to File a Wrongful Death Claim in Marlborough, MA?

Massachusetts law generally gives families three years from the date of death to file a wrongful death claim, a deadline that applies regardless of how long an investigation into a crash takes.

If families miss the three-year deadline, it can permanently bar them from pursuing compensation through the courts, no matter how strong the underlying case might be. This is especially significant when a crash involves an ongoing investigation, since families may be tempted to wait for a final determination of fault before taking any legal steps. In the meantime, evidence like vehicle debris, roadway conditions, and witness accounts can become harder to track down the longer a case sits untouched.

Massachusetts law does allow for limited exceptions that can affect how the three-year period is calculated, such as cases involving a defendant who leaves the state or where the cause of death wasn't immediately clear.

Questions about liability after a fatal crash may not be fully resolved right away, and a Massachusetts wrongful death lawyer can help a family understand whether any of these exceptions could apply to their specific timeline.

Beyond simply meeting the deadline, filing sooner rather than later can allow more time to gather documentation of lost income, funeral expenses, and the emotional toll on surviving family members. Legal guidance can help clarify how these damages are calculated and how the three-year window interacts with an active investigation.
