What Documentation Should You Keep After a Car Accident in Massachusetts?
The most important documents to preserve after a crash in Massachusetts include the police report from the collision, all medical records and bills related to your treatment, and any correspondence with insurance companies. Photographing your injuries, the vehicles involved, and the scene itself (if it is safe to do so) can also provide valuable visual evidence that supports your account of what happened.
Beyond the immediate aftermath, ongoing documentation matters just as much. Keep a record of every medical appointment, prescription, and out-of-pocket expense tied to your recovery. If your injuries cause you to miss work, document those absences and any resulting loss of income.
Massachusetts follows a no-fault insurance system for certain injury thresholds, which means that the documentation you maintain can directly affect both your insurance claim and any personal injury case that may follow. Gaps in records or delayed medical visits can create complications that are difficult to address later.
An attorney may be able to help you understand which documents are most relevant to your specific situation and how they could factor into a potential claim. Legal guidance can also help you identify losses you may not have considered, such as future medical costs or diminished earning capacity, and clarify what additional steps may strengthen your case under Massachusetts law.
