What Legal Options Do Families Have After a Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash in Taunton, MA?
When a person is killed in a multi-vehicle crash in Taunton, eligible surviving family members, including a spouse, children, and parents, may bring a wrongful death claim if a loved one is killed due to another party's negligence.
When a crash involves multiple vehicles, including a commercial semi-truck, the scope of potential liability can extend beyond individual drivers to include trucking companies, vehicle maintenance contractors, and other parties whose actions or failures may have contributed to the collision. Identifying all potentially responsible parties early is one of the most important reasons to consult a personal injury attorney as soon as possible after a fatal multi-vehicle crash.
The complexity of these types of cases means that the evidence needed to establish fault and liability can come from multiple sources and involve multiple parties' insurance policies. Maintenance records, driver logbooks, vehicle event recorder data, and witness accounts are among the types of evidence that may be relevant, and some of it is subject to retention policies that allow it to be discarded within a short window after a crash.
An attorney may be able to send formal legal hold notices to all relevant parties early in the process, preserving critical records before they are lost. Acting quickly on this front can make a meaningful difference in the strength of a family's legal position as the investigation develops.
The financial losses that surviving family members may be able to pursue in a Massachusetts wrongful death claim can be significant and wide-ranging. The economic value of the deceased's future earning capacity, funeral and burial costs, and the lasting loss of a loved one's companionship, guidance, and support are among the damages that may be considered depending on the specific circumstances involved.
For those who survived the crash with injuries, separate personal injury claims may also be available alongside the wrongful death action. A personal injury attorney may be able to help each affected party understand what options are available to them individually and ensure that any resolution reached genuinely reflects the full scope of their losses.
