Amesbury, MA — Police Pursuit Ends in Fatal Rollover Crash at Elm & Macy Sts

May 5, 2026

Amesbury, MA (May 5, 2026) — A police pursuit ended in a catastrophic two-vehicle collision on Monday, May 4, resulting in one death and several critical injuries. The crash occurred at the intersection of Elm Street and Macy Street, where emergency units were dispatched following reports of a vehicle rollover.

Arriving crews found a chaotic scene with one vehicle overturned and multiple victims trapped. Incident Command immediately requested two additional Advanced Life Support (ALS) units and launched a MedFlight helicopter for a victim suffering from multi-system trauma. Despite life-saving efforts and CPR in progress, officials have confirmed that one person has died from their injuries.

Three other individuals were transported to regional hospitals for treatment.

The accident remains under investigation.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the individual who lost their life. We also wish the injured persons a full recovery.

Liability and Recovery After High-Impact Rollover Accidents

To establish liability in a high-impact rollover crash, investigators must analyze vehicle telemetry and speed data, verify compliance with pursuit safety protocols, and determine the sequence of impact that led to the vehicle overturning. Because rollover accidents often result from sudden, high-speed maneuvers, identifying the primary cause is essential for the injured parties and the families of those lost to secure compensation for their medical and final expenses.

1. Determining the Tripping Mechanism of the Rollover

In a legal investigation, experts look for the trip point that caused the vehicle to roll. This can be a curb, a soft shoulder, or the force of the impact from the second vehicle. Determining whether the rollover was caused by the pursued driver's erratic steering or a specific roadway defect helps assign liability.

2. Utilizing Event Data Recorders (EDRs) in High-Speed Crashes

Modern vehicles contain black boxes that record critical data in the seconds before an impact. This evidence includes the exact speed, braking force, and steering angle of the vehicles. This data is the most objective way to counter insurance company claims of comparative negligence.

3. Pursuing a Wrongful Death and Survival Action

In Massachusetts, the loss of a loved one in a crash allows the family to file a wrongful death claim. This seeks recovery for funeral costs, the victim's future earnings, and the loss of companionship. Furthermore, in this case, because emergency crews reported "CPR in progress," a survival action may be pursued. This legal avenue seeks damages for the conscious pain and suffering the victim experienced between the moment of impact and their passing, providing a more comprehensive path toward justice.

Consulting a car accident lawyer can help deal with all that during such a challenging time. An attorney can also explain what documentation is needed and how the claim process works from start to finish.
