Canton, MA – 22-Year-Old Dies in Multi-Car Crash on I-95 at I-93 Split

March 11, 2026
Canton, MA (March 11, 2026) –On Wednesday morning, March 11, around 6 a.m., a 22-year-old man lost his life following a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 southbound just after the Interstate 93 split in nearby Westwood.

According to the Massachusetts State Police, emergency crews responded to reports of a serious collision involving multiple vehicles along the southbound lanes of I-95. Video footage from the scene showed one vehicle heavily damaged and positioned off the side of the roadway. Authorities later confirmed that one person died as a result of the crash. The victim was identified as 22-year-old Mathew McTiernan of Marshfield.

For several hours, vehicles were able to pass through the area only using the breakdown lane, which led to traffic backing up for several miles. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation reported that the two left lanes of I-95 southbound at Exit 26 were closed while emergency crews responded to the scene and investigators worked to document the crash.

By approximately 10:30 a.m., transportation officials confirmed that all lanes had been reopened and traffic flow in the area had resumed. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time.

Who Can File a Wrongful Death Claim in Massachusetts?

In Massachusetts, a wrongful death claim can be filed when someone dies as a result of another person’s negligence or wrongful conduct, including in serious motor vehicle accidents. These legal claims are intended to allow surviving family members to seek compensation for losses related to the death.

Typically, a wrongful death claim must be filed by the personal representative of the deceased person’s estate. This representative acts on behalf of the family members who are eligible to receive compensation. The individuals who may benefit from a wrongful death claim usually include the surviving spouse, children, or other close relatives who depended on the deceased.

Compensation in wrongful death cases may cover several types of damages. These can include medical expenses related to the final injury, funeral and burial costs, loss of income or financial support, and the emotional loss experienced by family members due to the death of their loved one.

Establishing a wrongful death claim often requires gathering evidence showing that another party’s negligence directly caused the fatal incident. In the case of a traffic accident, this evidence may include police reports, witness statements, accident reconstruction findings, and medical documentation.

Massachusetts law also places time limits on filing wrongful death claims. In most situations, the claim must be filed within three years of the date of death. Missing this deadline can prevent the family from pursuing compensation through the courts.
