Common Causes of Car Accidents in Quincy

Car accidents are a persistent concern in Quincy, a busy coastal city just south of Boston with heavy commuter traffic and several major roadways. Like many urban areas, crashes often occur due to a combination of driver behavior, road conditions, and traffic volume. Understanding the most common causes can help drivers become more aware of the risks on local roads.

Recent data from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation shows that Quincy experiences roughly 1,600 to 2,100 reported car accidents each year, with about 25% resulting in injuries and a smaller number (around three to five annually) resulting in fatalities. These figures reflect that even routine driving in a busy suburban city such as this one carries risk.

One of the leading causes of accidents in Quincy is distracted driving. Activities such as texting, adjusting navigation systems, or interacting with passengers can divert a driver’s attention from the road. Even a few seconds of distraction can significantly increase the chance of a collision, particularly in areas with frequent intersections and pedestrian activity.

Speeding is another major factor. Drivers who exceed posted speed limits have less time to react to sudden traffic changes or hazards. Speeding also increases the severity of crashes when they do occur. In dense areas like Quincy, where residential streets and commercial corridors intersect, higher speeds can make accidents more dangerous for both motorists and pedestrians.

Rear-end and angle collisions are among the most frequently reported crash types at intersections in the city, often caused by following too closely, failing to yield, or running traffic signals. Congested traffic and frequent stop-and-go conditions can contribute to these types of crashes.

Weather can also play a role. Rain, snow, and icy pavement are known to increase the likelihood of collisions by reducing tire traction and visibility. In some Quincy crash analyses, more than a quarter of accidents occurred on wet or icy roads.
