Chicopee, MA (July 11, 2026) – A wrong-way driver was taken into custody early Friday morning, July 10, after striking a Massachusetts State Police cruiser and another vehicle, leaving several people injured.

According to Massachusetts State Police, troopers responded to reports of a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction on Interstate 91. As officers attempted to intercept the vehicle, the driver collided with a State Police K9 cruiser before crashing head-on into another motorist.

The state trooper, the K9, the other driver, and the suspect were all transported to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities said the driver has been charged with operating under the influence and several additional motor vehicle offenses. The incident remains under investigation.

We wish the injured trooper a speedy recovery.

How Can Criminal Charges Affect a Personal Injury Claim After a Car Accident in Massachusetts?

After a car accident in Massachusetts, criminal charges filed against a driver may become one part of the overall legal process, but they do not automatically determine the outcome of a personal injury claim. Although the two processes are related, they serve different legal purposes and follow different standards.

As the investigation continues, law enforcement may collect evidence such as the official crash report, witness statements, photographs, vehicle damage, field sobriety testing results, and any available video footage. Investigators may also examine physical evidence from the scene and other documentation to determine how the collision occurred. Depending on the circumstances, information gathered during the criminal investigation may become relevant during insurance negotiations or civil litigation.

A complete injury claim often relies on documentation that shows both the physical effects of the crash and the financial consequences that follow. Medical records, treatment histories, prescription costs, and records of missed work can help illustrate the ongoing impact of the injuries and the recovery process.

When a crash involves pending criminal charges, the outcome of the investigation may become an important part of the civil claims process. Assistance with reviewing evidence, organizing records, and communicating with insurers can help ensure that relevant information is properly considered when evaluating potential compensation.
