May 1, 2026

Everett, MA (May 1, 2026) — A woman was injured after she was forced to leap from a second-story window to escape a fast-moving house fire on Franklin Street. Emergency crews were dispatched to the residence on Friday, April 30, shortly before 11:00 a.m.

Everett Fire officials reported that the woman was trapped on the second floor of the home as flames spread through the structure. In a desperate bid for safety, she jumped from a window on the right side of the building.

She was treated at the scene for injuries sustained in the fall and was subsequently transported to a local hospital. Her current condition has not been released.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

We extend our thoughts to the injured woman and hope for her full and swift recovery.

What Are the Legal Protections for Tenants and Homeowners After a Fire in Massachusetts?

In the aftermath of a devastating fire, victims must navigate a complex web of insurance requirements and housing laws to protect their financial future and find a path toward recovery.

For homeowners and renters with active insurance policies, "Loss of Use" (also known as Additional Living Expenses or ALE) is a critical benefit. This coverage pays for temporary housing, food, and other increased living costs while the home is being repaired or deemed uninhabitable. It is vital to keep all receipts for these expenses immediately following the fire. An attorney can help ensure that insurance adjusters provide a fair valuation for both the structural damage and the personal property lost in the blaze.

Massachusetts law has strict requirements for smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in residential buildings. Following a fire, investigators will determine if the property was equipped with working detectors at the time of the incident.

If you were a tenant and the building lacked functioning alarms, the landlord could be held liable for your injuries and property loss. An independent legal investigation often looks beyond the official fire report to check the building’s history of safety inspections and code compliance.

Injuries sustained while escaping a fire are generally considered a direct result of the fire itself. Under Massachusetts law, if the fire was caused by the negligence of a third party (such as a faulty electrical system, a defective appliance, or a contractor's error), the victim may be entitled to seek damages for their physical injuries, emotional distress, and medical bills. Proving "foreseeability" is key; if a property owner failed to provide a safe second exit or failed to maintain the electrical wiring, they may be responsible for the trauma of the escape.

Speaking with a personal injury attorney after a residential fire can be helpful, as they can clarify available options and explain how Massachusetts law may apply. Legal guidance can assist with reviewing policy terms, organizing records, and handling insurer communication.
