June 29, 2026

Boston, MA (June 29, 2026) – This is a follow-up to an earlier piece that can be found here.

A Haverhill man killed in a wrong-way crash on Route 93 North before Exit 15A has been identified as 28-year-old Riley Sergi. The crash occurred just before midnight on Saturday, June 27.

The Massachusetts State Police stated that the driver of a 2004 Cadillac Escalade entered Rte 93 North at Exit 15B and proceeded to travel southbound in the northbound lanes. Two vehicles, a Honda Odyssey and an Audi A4, attempted to avoid the wrong-way driver and crashed. The occupants of the Honda Odyssey, a family of four, were transported to a Boston-area hospital for evaluation.

Shortly after the initial crash, the wrong-way driver collided head-on with a Chevrolet Cruze. Both drivers in the second crash were transported to Boston-area hospitals. Riley Sergi, the driver of the Chevrolet Cruze, died from his injuries.

The wrong-way driver, 81-year-old Antone Carvalho of Somerset, will be issued a summons to appear in court at a later date.

We extend our deepest condolences to Riley Sergi's family and all those who loved him.

What Legal Options Exist After a Fatal Wrong-Way Crash in Boston, MA?

Under Massachusetts law, surviving family members may be able to pursue a wrongful death claim when a fatal crash is caused by a wrong-way driver. Importantly, a civil wrongful death claim is separate from any criminal case or traffic proceedings involving the at-fault driver and can move forward on its own timeline.

When a loved one loses their life because of another person's careless or reckless actions, Massachusetts law allows certain family members, including a spouse, children, and parents, to seek compensation through a wrongful death claim. Understanding how the crash occurred is often one of the first and most important steps in that process.

This can become especially complicated in incidents involving multiple collisions. When a wrong-way driver causes an initial crash before continuing and triggering additional impacts, investigators must piece together the entire sequence of events leading up to the fatal collision. Factors such as how long the driver was traveling against traffic, whether other motorists had an opportunity to react, and how each impact contributed to the outcome can all become important questions in determining liability.

To answer those questions, investigators often rely on a combination of witness statements, police findings, physical evidence from the scene, and any available recordings or emergency dispatch records. Together, these sources can help create a clearer picture of how the events unfolded and who may be responsible.

Once liability has been established, attention often turns to the losses suffered by the surviving family. Under Massachusetts' wrongful death statute, recoverable damages may include funeral and burial expenses, the loss of the deceased person's future income and financial support, and the loss of companionship, guidance, and care that the individual would have continued to provide over time.

Because multi-vehicle crashes involve several insurance policies and extensive investigations, preserving evidence and identifying all potential sources of recovery can be critical. Legal guidance may help families gather important information, evaluate available insurance coverage, and ensure that any resolution fully reflects the lasting impact of their loss.
