Second-Floor Fire Breaks Out on Elm St in Georgetown, MA
Georgetown, MA (July 3, 2026) – One person was taken to a hospital after a fire broke out on the second floor of a home on Elm Street on Thursday afternoon, July 2.
The call came in around 4:12 p.m., and Georgetown Fire arrived on scene within minutes. A working fire was transmitted, which prompted mutual aid from several surrounding towns, and crews had the blaze knocked down a short time later.
Emergency medical personnel evaluated two residents at the property. One of them was later transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital for further treatment, while the other did not require transport.
The cause of the fire has not yet been released. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
We hope the person taken to the hospital has a full and speedy recovery.
When Can a Landlord Be Held Responsible for a House Fire in Georgetown, MA?
A landlord or property owner can be held liable for a fire if it's shown that faulty wiring, malfunctioning smoke detectors, or another maintenance issue they knew about, or should have known about, contributed to the blaze.
Residents caught in a house fire usually deal with smoke inhalation, burns, or injuries sustained while trying to escape a burning building. Beyond physical harm, displaced tenants may also face the loss of personal belongings and the cost of finding temporary housing.
Massachusetts law requires landlords to maintain rental properties in a safe, habitable condition under the state's sanitary code, and a failure to do so can support a premises liability claim.
Because fire origin and cause investigations can take time, a personal injury lawyer can help preserve evidence like the property's maintenance records and any prior code violations before that information becomes difficult to obtain. Massachusetts generally allows three years from the date of an injury to file a premises liability claim.
