Who Pays for Medical Bills After a Crash on Revere Beach Pkwy in Everett, MA?
Massachusetts is a no-fault insurance state, which means medical bills after a crash like this one are typically paid first through Personal Injury Protection, or PIP, coverage attached to the vehicle involved, regardless of who caused the crash. PIP generally covers up to $8,000 in medical expenses and lost wages, and it applies whether the injured person was a driver, passenger, or even a pedestrian struck by the vehicle.
Once PIP benefits are exhausted, the injured person can look to their own health insurance to cover additional treatment, though that usually comes with its own deductibles and copays.
Massachusetts law also sets a threshold for stepping outside the no-fault system entirely. If medical expenses exceed $2,000, or if the injury involves a fracture, permanent disfigurement, or another serious outcome, an injured person may be able to pursue a claim directly against the at-fault driver for damages beyond what PIP and health insurance provide, including pain and suffering.
Sorting out which bills PIP covers, when health insurance kicks in, and whether the injury meets that threshold for a further claim can get complicated quickly. A Massachusetts car accident lawyer can help make sure medical providers are billed correctly and that any gap in coverage doesn't fall on the injured person after the fact.
